Electric height-adjustable desks for the office: 7 things to consider
With an electric height-adjustable desk, also known as a standing desk, you change the height at the press of a button, so you can work at the same desk sitting or standing. Seven things matter when choosing one for the office. More important than the price is that the desk suits people of different heights and carries their equipment for years.
At home you buy a desk for yourself. In an office you buy a desk that different people will sit at over the years, and that changes the choice. Below are the actual specifications of the desks in the catalogue and seven things to check before you order.

“Not stated” means the catalogue does not give this figure. The catalogue has no technical data for the MDD Mito and Gravity; these figures come from the MDD website (marked “manufacturer”). According to the manufacturer, both desks are electrically height-adjustable. Prices exclude VAT and are subject to change. You can see the current price in the catalogue.
1. Height range: does the desk suit your shortest and your tallest employee?
The height range shows how low and how high the desk goes. The lower limit matters for a shorter person working seated. The upper limit matters for a tall person working standing. If several people use the desk, or the person at it changes, the range has to cover both the shortest and the tallest.
The ranges in the catalogue are: OCCO desk 590 to 1240 mm, OCCO pro 595 to 1245 mm, Narbutas Motion DOA140 650 to 1300 mm, Motion Executive 700 to 1200 mm and Move&Lead 735 to 1300 mm. According to MDD, the Mito moves from 760 to 1300 mm and the Gravity from 750 to 1160 mm. If your team includes shorter people, look at the lower limit. If it includes tall people, look at the upper limit.
A good starting point is a height at which your elbows are at roughly a right angle and your shoulders are relaxed, both sitting and standing. You do not need to work this out in advance: you find the height at the desk and, if the desk has a control panel with memory, save it.
2. One motor or two?
On a dual-motor frame, each leg has its own motor and the legs rise together. In the catalogue, every desk with a stated number of motors has two: the OCCO desk, OCCO pro, Motion DOA140 and Motion Executive DRA200. According to MDD, the Mito also has two motors.
The MDD Gravity is built differently: the top rests on a single supporting leg and, according to the manufacturer, its only motor sits inside the base. For a desk with two legs, ask whether there is a motor in each leg. If the desk carries two monitors and different people work at it, we recommend a dual-motor frame.
3. Lifting capacity: how much can the desk carry?
Lifting capacity shows how much weight the motors can raise. Add up the top, the monitors, the monitor arm, the computer and the paperwork. The OCCO desk has a lifting capacity of 100 kg, the OCCO pro 150 kg. According to MDD, the Mito frame carries 100 kg and the Gravity top up to 70 kg.
If the top is large (for example 180 cm) and there are two monitors on the desk, choose a frame with more capacity to spare. The catalogue does not give the lifting capacity of the Narbutas desks. If you are considering them, confirm the lifting capacity in the quote.
4. Top size: how big a desk should you choose?
For two monitors and paperwork, a 160 cm wide top is a sensible choice. A depth of 80 cm puts the monitor further from your eyes.
According to the catalogue, the Motion DOA140 top is 140 x 80, 160 x 80 or 180 x 80 cm. The OCCO desk frame takes a top 1000 to 1600 mm wide and 600 to 800 mm deep. The Motion Executive, an executive desk, is 200 x 90 cm, and the Move&Lead 180 x 85 or 200 x 85 cm.

5. Stability and speed
In the raised position, the desk must not wobble when you type or lean your elbows on the top. Stability depends on the frame and the leg profile, so check the frame specifications before you order.
The OCCO desk moves at 32 mm/s and the OCCO pro at 40 mm/s; according to MDD, the Mito also moves at 40 mm/s. According to the catalogue, the noise level of the OCCO desks is below 50 dB. This is worth looking at if the desks stand side by side in an open-plan office.
6. Control panel, memory and safety
A control panel with memory stores your sitting and standing heights, so the right position is one button press away. This is especially useful at shared workstations: nobody has to find their height from scratch every time. In the catalogue’s technical data, a control panel with memory presets is listed for the OCCO pro; on the OCCO desk it is optional. According to MDD, the Mito also has a control panel with memory.
An anti-collision system stops the desk if it hits a chair or a cabinet while moving. According to the catalogue, the OCCO desk has one, and according to the manufacturer, so does the Mito. In an office with drawer pedestals and chairs under and next to the desks, this is a sensible requirement.
7. Warranty: what does it actually cover?
The warranty on an electric height-adjustable desk often comes in two parts. According to the catalogue, Narbutas and MDD desks have a five-year warranty, but only two years on motors and electronics. The motor and control unit are the moving and electrical parts of the desk, so it is worth asking about their warranty separately.
According to the catalogue, the OCCO desk and OCCO pro have a five-year warranty. The catalogue does not mention a separate period for their motors.
For each desk, ask whether the warranty covers the frame and the motors separately and how long each period is. In an office, a desk has to last for years and serve several users, so the difference matters.
Extras that tend to be forgotten
An electric height-adjustable desk moves, and the cables have to move with it. If the power cable and monitor cables are too short or hang loose, the desk pulls them tight as it rises. For the OCCO desks, the catalogue lists four extras:
- a cable tray, which gathers the cables in one place under the top;
- a cable shelf, which holds the extension lead and power adapters;
- a cable spine, which guides the cables from the floor to the desk and moves with it;
- an adjustable monitor arm, which frees up space on the top and raises the monitor to the right height.

The desk and the chair go together. When sitting, first adjust the chair so that your feet are flat on the floor, then set the desk to elbow height. Should you choose an electric or a manually adjustable desk?
For the office, we recommend electric. Changing the height takes the press of a button, whereas on a crank-operated desk you have to wind the height up or down by hand.
How high should the desk be when standing?
A good starting point: elbows at roughly a right angle and shoulders relaxed. The top edge of the monitor should be at eye level. If the desk has a control panel with memory, save the height you have found, so you do not have to look for it next time.
What size of top fits the OCCO desk frame?
According to the catalogue, the OCCO desk frame takes a top 1000 to 1600 mm wide and 600 to 800 mm deep. If you think you will need a larger top later, mention it in your enquiry. That way it can be taken into account straight away when choosing the frame and the top.
